CAMP IHC

A graphic design role for one of the most recognised sleep-away camps in the US summer camp industry.

ABOUT THE CAMP
Camp IHC is a traditional 7-week sleep away summer camp based within an endless mountain range in northeastern Pennsylvania, USA. Every day for 2 months I felt like a kid amongst 650+ other kids and 450+ staff members enjoying an adventurous experience doing what I love as a graphic designer whilst meeting people from across the globe.

MY ROLE IN THE TEAM
I worked closely with the Head of Marketing & Content (Liam Macleod aka. The Captain) and was part of a media team that functioned like an in-house marketing agency. I lead multiple graphic design projects for the IHC brands including creating high-quality assets for camp events, promotional materials, social media content, and helping with the production of the summer print yearbook. As part of the dynamic environment, I worked alongside a team of videographers, photographers, and content creators to contribute to the camp’s range of content. Capturing the spirit and energy for campers and their families was vital in portraying the camp’s essence, whilst still maintaining the brand identity.

THE BEST SUMMER JOB STAFF HANDBOOKS
Consolidating closely with the company’s branding efforts, I worked on the development of staff handbooks for different job areas on camp. I incorporated custom graphics, icons, and layouts that align with the camp's branding to make the handbooks both practical and visually engaging for future staff members. The series of handbooks were a rewarding process in relation to the time and effort that went into applying consistency with the blue and white colour palette and using the same layouts on each spread.

2024 PRINT YEARBOOK
Moving onto the biggest project of them all, I had the privilege of bringing the summer’s best moments to life in the print year book. I was responsible for designing the front cover and interior spreads; carefully curating a selection of the top photos from the summer and working closely with the lead photographer to direct staff photographs that encapsulated our team’s dynamics. This collaborative process allowed me to blend creative design with storytelling, resulting in a memorabilia for everyone involved during the summer. I would spend every day scanning through camp photos and picking out the most eye-catching shots that portrayed joy, excitement, togetherness, and moments that can bring back memories.

THE BEST SUMMER JOB ICONOGRAPHY
My very first project creating a series of custom icons to represent different summer roles at Camp IHC felt like a positive way to ease me into the role as graphic designer in the team. It was an opportunity for me to showcase my skills in illustration and understanding the brand. The aim was to bring the IHC essence to future staff: excitement, action, and a stand-out identity to serve as a functional tool to enhance communication and branding across camp materials. I had to ensure that the iconography remained consistent and flexible as I implemented the recognisable blue and white colour palette to showcase each graphic design across different devices.

THE CAMP LIFE FOUNDATION MERCHANDISE
Mid way through the summer I had the privilege of designing hoodies for The Camp Life Foundation; a nonprofit charity organisation lead by the older campers at IHC to help raise financial support for disadvantaged children amongst a close community who are limited to resources or opportunities. As a result over $5,000 was raised for charity through hoodie purchases.

STUDIO_18 TEAM
As for the in-house summer camp content production team, Studio_18 is a group of young creatives assembled by the Head of Media & Marketing where we all played a key influence in breaking the boundary of what a summer camp media team can bring by showing a strong passion and dedication to providing some of the best cutting-edge content in the summer camp industry. As a graphic designer, I supported the team by creating visually engaging designs that not only aligned with our innovative vision but also enhanced the overall branding and storytelling across various media platforms; including social media graphics, thumbnails for video content, and supporting the production of the video year book. To commemorate an amazing summer with the team, I designed specialised Studio 18 hoodies as a physical memorabilia to wear as a reminder of each team-member’s unique personal trait and how they brought an amazing experience for everyone involved.
